Filipino baller Kai Sotto scored 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks in his first game at the 2023 NBA Summer League and Pinoy basketball fans worldwide went berserk.

For several decades, Filipino athletes and fans only dreamt of making it to the NBA. We are, after all, a nation of vertically challenged people. However, Kai Sotto, the remarkable Filipino basketball prospect, has emerged a beacon of hope, embodying the aspirations of countless Pinoy athletes and basketball devotees.

Kai's journey has, without a doubt, been an inspiring one. He was born May 11, 2002 in Las Piñas, and showed a natural affinity for basketball early on. In high school, the varsity player dwarfed opponents and led his team, the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, to multiple championships. Sotto's exceptional talent and height—he’s 7-foot, 2-inches tall—captured the attention of numerous basketball scouts and experts, both in the Philippines and abroad.

Kai’s incredible basketball career is replete with impressive accomplishments. He was a two-time UAAP Junior Finals MVP, leading Ateneo to back-to-back championships. Sotto also represented the Philippines in international competitions including the FIBA Under-17 and Under-19 tournaments where he showcased his skill and potential against top-tier young talent from around the globe.

Previously, the NBA seemed like an unattainable dream, but Kai's emergence on the global basketball stage has shattered barriers and showcased the immense potential of Filipino players. In a groundbreaking move, Kai participated in the NBA Summer League as member of the Orlando Magic's summer league team. This achievement made him the first-ever player from the Philippines to play in the prestigious league.

"It feels good obviously to anybody to have a lot of guys cheering for you, it’s a blessing. It’s just for me to do my part, to show my 100 percent effort every game. Hopefully I made them happy and proud," Kai said in a video posted on the Orlando Magic's social media account.

The NBA Summer League provided Sotto with a platform to showcase his skills and gain exposure to the fast-paced and highly competitive world of professional basketball. Even if Kai had three games in which he did not get to play—despite his willingness to from day 1—this did not deter him from being a positive influence on his team, cheering and being a positive force from the sidelines.

Basketball players and coaches in the US have been effusive in their praise for Kai and his skills on the court. Many have recognized his immense potential and believe he has what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

NBA veteran Channing Frye said, "Kai Sotto has the tools to be a special player. His height, agility, and touch around the basket make him a unique talent. With continued development, he could have a bright future in the NBA."

Fil-Am Jordan Clarkson, who plays for the Utah Jazz, gave props to his Gilas Pilipinas teammate. “Solid performance keep grinding away!" Jordan posted on Twitter. Jordan has always given his full support to Kai’s NBA dreams, saying good things about him and backing him up even after he was left undrafted by the league two years ago.

Similarly, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon acknowledged Kai’s skillset and work ethic, saying, "Kai Sotto has an incredible potential. He's a hard worker and has a natural talent for the game. With the right guidance and opportunities, I have no doubt he can make a significant impact in the NBA."

Even his teammates in the NBA Summer League recognized Kai’s talent. Sindarius Thornwell, a fellow member of the Orlando Magic summer league team, said “Kai Sotto is a special player. His size and ability to shoot make him a matchup nightmare for opponents. He's always learning and improving, and I believe he has what it takes to play in the NBA."

Kai’s inclusion in the NBA Summer League carries significant implications for the NBA and Filipino basketball community. His success challenges the conventional belief that Filipino players are limited to playing within the confines of Philippine or Asian basketball leagues. By his very presence, Kai illustrates the depth of basketball talent in the Philippines and offers a fresh perspective on player recruitment and talent identification.

The above endorsements from seasoned players and coaches attest to Kai’s tremendous potential as a truly successful basketball player. With continued development and the right opportunities, he can leave a lasting impact on the global basketball stage. The impact of Sotto's NBA journey, of course, extends beyond the basketball court. It fosters a sense of national pride and unity among Filipinos worldwide. His achievements reinforce the belief that Filipinos possess the innate resolve, talent, and grit to excel in any field, transcending perceived limitations and breaking new ground.
