The Cebu Food and Wine Festival 2024 kicks off this weekend with "Taste Cebu," a grand tasting that will bring guests to all points of the island through a spectacle of sight, sound and flavor.

This festival, which started out in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, was a way to keep Cebu’s F&B industry alive amid the lockdowns, and has become a celebration of the island’s diverse food scene.

The festival kicks off at the NUSTAR Grand Ballroom where Tourism Secretary Chirstina Frasco, JG Summit Holdings president Lance Gokongwei, and Cebu Food and Wine Festival chairperson Kate Dychianco-Anzani are expected to lead 1,500 guests as they do a ceremonial tasting to open the festival.

The "Taste Cebu" grand tasting is patterned after the Department of Tourisms gastronomic framework where the aim is to “foodstamp” heirloom recipes and local ingredients. The framework promotes holding regional food festivals and tours to highlight these dishes.

NUSTAR Resort is pulling out all the stops to transform the ballroom into an immersive tasting experience with light, sound, and floor-to-ceiling virtual projections inspired by TEAMLAB installations in Japan and Singapore. The tasting area will be split into three zones with 15 tasting stations, over 50 varieties of wines and spirits with 2020 WGA World Gourmet Awards best female chef Lisa Revilla, French-Asian chef David Chien, and Pampangueño cuisine pillar chef Sau Del Rosario putting their own spins on Cebuano ingredients.

The Wave Zone brings guests to the beaches and the waters of Cebu where booths will feature such delicacies as scallops and the sea urchin like tarorot from Bantayan Island.

Another zone will bring diners up to the agricultural areas of Cebu putting the spotlight on Talisay’s lechon, and Ronda’s smokey pork humba.

Then the last zone will highlight the urban areas and their special dishes. Danao’s kusahos (special sun-dried tapa), Compostela’s milk, and Cebu City’s Ngohiong will be in this zone’s menu.

The whole festival is a lot grander this time around and will last for a month with JPark Island Resort and Waterpark hosting its closing ceremonies.

The centerpiece of the festival is the 36th Joint Meeting of the United Nation’s World Tourism Council’s Commission for East Asia and the Pacific – Commission for South Asia and the first UN regional forum for Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific where gastronomy tourism frameworks, roadmaps, and sustainability will be on the agenda. Delegates from around Asia and beyond will be given the opportunity to go around Mactan and Cebu to the experience Filipino hospitality and sample local food while they are here.

The festival’s calendar is jampacked with special food events that range from buffets, special offers and discounts, collaborative dinners, wine appreciation nights, and even a sunset wine cruise.
