Wearing a hat will make you go bald, and other hair myths we need to set straight

Growing up, you’ve probably heard an older person, or maybe a playmate, telling you that wearing a hat can make you go bald. Or maybe someone has convinced you that if you pulled that annoying strand of gray hair, two more gray strands will grow in its place. Well, it’s time we let you in on a not-so-classified info: those are just myths.

Believing in these hair myths can result into bad hair care routines that may, eventually, cause real damage to your scalp and hair. Thankfully, celebrity grooming expert and fitness coach Jigs Mayuga has taken it upon himself to straighten a few kinks in your hair knowledge via a new episode of ANCX’s Man Hacks.

Jigs listed down the myths you need to stop believing now:

1. Getting a haircut often will make hair grow faster.

While getting a regular haircut takes care of split ends—which is a good thing—it has nothing to do with the roots from which the hair grows. On average, hair grows only around half an inch every month. Rather than focusing on the growth rate, Jigs says it is better to just focus on having a healthy scalp. Healthy scalp equals healthy hair.

2. You need to brush your hair 100 times a day.

First of all, who has the time to brush his or her hair a hundred times a day? Not only is this decades-long myth a waste of your precious minutes but it may also be harmful to your hair. Don’t take our word for it. Jigs says to just look at your hairbrush after a few strokes. You’d definitely find a few hair strands stuck there. Imagine how much more strands you will lose if you brushed your hair a hundred times.

3. Pull one gray hair strand, and two more will grow.

Your gray hair strand is not like a mogwai when it gets wet—it won’t multiply. Gray hair strands are brought about by different factors: genetics, stress, hormonal imbalance, aging, among them. Whether you like it or not, gray hair strands will grow, gradually. This said, try to resist the urge to pull that strand because doing so may damage your hair follicles. Damaged follicles can result to stunted hair growth, or odd hair growth patterns. It is best to focus on taking care of your remaining hair.

4. Wearing a hat can make you go bald.

Again, hair damage, gray hair, and hair loss are caused by several factors like genetics and hormonal changes. Unless you pulled your hair strands upon removing your hat, there is no direct link between wearing a hat and going bald. In fact, Jigs says, hats provide protection against excessive heat from the sun which can damage hair, especially if your hair is colored or chemically treated.

Instead of believing these hair myths, Jigs suggests to find a hair care routine and hair care products that save, nurture, and strengthen your hair. The grooming expert suggests one brand: Novuhair, which combines natural ingredients and essential oils that are formulated to manage hair loss and hair fall. According to Jigs, Novuhair has been clinically tested and proven effective in taking care of scalp and strands. Keep it in your daily grooming arsenal and full, vibrant, and healthy hair will be a total reality—not a myth.
