LOOK! The Simpsons wear Balenciaga, surprise Paris Fashion Week crowd

Apparently, the fashion house’s Creative Director has been a fan of the animated series since he was a child in the former Soviet Union

On Paris’s return to holding live shows for Fashion Week, Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia surprised the crowd at the Théâtre du Châtelet with a 10-minute episode of The Simpsons instead of the expected runway show.

There was, yes, a runway show but it was in animation format, with the models all characters from Springfield, hometown of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson. The short feature made fun of the excesses of the fashion world, the over-the-top silhouettes of Balenciaga, and its equally over-the-top price tag—$19,000 for a gown that Marge got to wear on her birthday. It appears that Gvasalia has been a fan of the American cartoon series even as a young boy in the former Soviet Union.

Again, in lieu of a traditional fashion show, the film showing was preceded by a special red carpet to-do where the fashion house’s friends, models and team members arrived wearing pieces from the fashion house’s latest collection from streetwear to daywear, elegant eveningwear to proto-couture pieces. Silhouettes varied from ultra-slim to disproportionately oversized.

Materials for this season represent Balenciaga’s commitment to responsible production: upcycled denim among others, as well as plant-based leather, an innovation made from a mix of fibers derived from cactus and bio polymers. Ninety five percent of plain and printed fabrics in the collection are certified sustainable, claims the label.
