Drop the tux, wear the dress: The 22 most fearless men’s looks at the Met Gala

From Instagram’s Adam Mosseri in Bode to Lil Nas X in body-hugging Versace, the boys had a party interpreting this year’s Met Gala dress code

It was not a good idea to wear a tux at the Met Gala this year, as men like Kit Harrington, Adrien Brody and James Corden found out Monday when they attended fashion’s biggest night. It was, however, a good idea to wear a tunic dress, as SNL's Pete Davidson showed, along with a matching Thom Browne white coat and the comic's famous BDE.

It was also a good idea to wrap one’s self with a quilted patchwork blanket of floral prints like A$AP Rocky. Or, in Lil Nas X’s case, it was a fantastic idea to hit the Metropolitan Museum red carpet with not one but three fantastical outfits: an intricately beaded cape, a golden suit of armor, and finally a crystal-encrusted bodysuit.

In short, it was an evening for statement-making (as in Daniel Levy’s outfit that featured two men kissing), for turning up like it was the MTV Music Awards from another time, for not blending in with the security detail and being outshadowed by your lady date.

Also, it was definitely an evening for wearing touches of Americana, it being this year’s dress code—hence the rodeo-inspired outfits (Pharell), the hip hop touches (Tyler Mitchell in Bode), and American rockstar nods (Dear Even Hansen's Ben Platt in a 70s style denim ensemble). The party was put together, after all, to celebrate the Costume Institute’s latest exhibition called “In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion.”

The men indeed had a little more fun than usual this year at Anna Wintour’s big fashion shebang, at least when it came to interpreting the evening’s dress code. On this page are the fearless outfits they strutted in. Enjoy and take inspiration.
