Leipzig is one of the most fascinating and yet one of the most overlooked cities in Germany.
It’s the largest city in the state of Saxony, and next to Berlin, the most populous in eastern Germany. Yet few, outside Germany, know much about Leipzig, and that’s cool, because despite the many treasures you come across in this historic trade and mercantile capital, it’s never crawling with foreign tourists.
On weekends, however, the Zentrum or city center is a popular shopping and entertainment destination among locals from nearby cities – even from as far as Berlin.
Leipzig is connected to the rest of Europe by high speed rail and an international airport so it’s easy to add it to any European itinerary – even if just a short stopover on the way to Berlin or Munich.
